Madekwe is the daughter of an ethnically diverse family in South London in England. Her mother is English and her father Nigerian. She grew on the South London council estate and when she was 14she enrolled in The Brit School. She attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London in which she earned an BA in acting.
