Madekwe, a mixed race British-Nigerian child was born into an ethnically diverse family from South London. Her mother is English and her father is Nigerian. Her family was raised in the south of a London council estate, and went to The Brit School at age 14. At the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art is where she obtained a BA degree in acting. She was on stage in numerous productions during her time at school like King Henry V, as Princess Katherine as well as Wuthering Heights, as Catherine Earnshaw.
Madekwe first began her acting career with the film Storm Damage. In the following years, she appeared on Teachers, Doctors Casualty and Drop Dead Gorgeous. Her breakthrough role came in 2007's Woody Allen film Cassandra's Dream. It was in the role of Colin Farrell (who played the character of Cassandra) as well as Ewan McGrath. Ashley Leggat was born in Hamilton, Ontario, into an extended family of. Her parents, Roy and Patty, as well as her brothers Brett, Todd, and Bram who were also present. The four brothers of Ashley, all very physically active, were all playing hockey in the winters and baseball in the summer, so that she grew up playing in parks and arenas.
