Madekwe was born in South London, England into a mixed family. Her father is Nigerian as well as Swiss as well as her mother is English. Her family was raised in the south of a London council estate, and went to The Brit School at age fourteen. In the following year she was cast as Elisha (a BBC Three drama-pilot) in West 10 LDN. Additionally she was a part of Trexx as Ollie and six episodes in Flipside. In 2008, she was cast as Bambi who was the leading character in the ITV2 drama Secret Diary of a Call Girl. Madekwe was the main character in 2008's comedy How to Alienate and Lose Friends. Some of her theatre credits include Little Sweet Thing (by Roy Williams) and Flight Path (by David Watson).
Madekwe was officially introduced to her US debut with The Beautiful Life in 2009. The show aired just two episodes on The CW, and was later ended. Ashley Davenport, a character from ABC's Revenge drama series was cast for her as Ashley Davenport. Madekwe starred as a regular character on the drama series on ABC Revenge for two seasons. Ashley Leggat, an actress nominated twice for a Gemini Award, comes from a large Hamilton family. Her four older brothers were present as well and included twins Todd and Bram, Brett & Rob. Ashley continued to perform competitively throughout high school in top divisions such as tap, Jazz, Ballet, Pointe, Acrobatics, Musical Theatre, Lyrical Hip Hop and many more. The top soloist at big competitions, such as International Dance Challenge, Showstoppers, 56-7-8 Showtime, Flash Dance, Dance, Dance, Dance which were all given to Ashley.
